Preparing for your Newborn Session

Capturing the Miracles of Those First Months: The Newborn Session

Tips on what to expect and how to prepare

Consumed with joy while unfathomably exhausted. Marveling at those tiny toes through a dim nursery nightlight.

The first few weeks with your little one are just so paradoxical! Each moment is exciting and challenging. New and miraculous. And unquestionably…fast!

A newborn photography session slows you down for some of those precious moments, capturing the beauty of your baby’s first phase of life. You will not regret booking a newborn session–trust me!

First things first. Schedule with me!

Of course, due dates are never firm, but having a rough idea of the month that the baby will arrive is helpful. I only take a few newborns per month so I’m flexible and accommodating for my families. Once the baby is born, we’ll communicate via email to work out the details – sometimes, families need a few weeks to get themselves together, others are ready the moment they bring the baby home! Whatever works for you, works for me – I had my first baby in 2021 so I completely understand how you feel.

What to Expect During your Newborn Shoot

While everyone is acclimating to life with one another, newborn sessions are generally best set in the comfort of your own home. This allows you to feed the baby with ease and feel relaxed in your element. When I arrive, I’ll take off my shoes, find the best light in your home, and guide you through every step of the shoot! It’s that simple! Personally, I love early mornings for newborn shoots.

Here are a few other tips to help you make the most of your session:

Plan who you would like to be a part of your photos

Siblings, grandparents, and pets are all welcome! If it’s important to you to include others with the baby, just remember that we’ll need more time for more people.

Choose your wardrobes.

Generally, neutral tones and minimalistic patterns allow the baby to be the star of the show! Subtle colors are fine, but bold patterns and bright colors might be distracting. Consider what colors might compliment the nursery decor or other living spaces where we will shoot. Feel free to dress up or be casual, whatever makes you feel comfortable! Feel free to have a wardrobe change during your session for just babe or the whole fam!

Don’t stress about your home being impeccable.

You’ve got a full plate with a newborn, so don’t feel like your home needs to be perfect! If you’re like me, you’ll take any clutter and throw it in a closet or spare room 5 minutes before the session. A quick tidying up will go a long way. Keep your home warm the day of the shoot to keep the baby comfortable while changing clothes. I will move things around during the shoot if needed as well and I promise – I come with a no-judgement attitude!

Relax and enjoy some quality time together.

Look at your baby with awe and amazement–you deserve a little time to take it all in! My style leans to natural, real-life shots with genuine expressions, so I really love when parents are present and relaxed. I will, of course, get you some posed shots for birth announcements as well.

Years from now, your newborn photo gallery will allow you to reminisce on those sweet early days. Stress and sleepless nights? Sure. But one look at those precious little fingers and your heart will swell with nostalgia.

xo,

Natalie

Surprise Wildwood Family Beach Photoshoot

Oh, Wildwood, NJ…I realized why it always feels like home – it is basically South Philly with sand! Seriously though, I don’t always love being the “surprise” but when the reaction is PURE JOY, I’ll gladly accept. This family photoshoot surprise for Wendy (pictured above with a smile) filled my heart with so much love!

We met Joanna & Adrian in college but they moved to Boston a few years back. It has been wayyy too long since we’ve seen each other (they now have a year & a half old!) so I even brought my husband along…which was the best decision ever because he was able to jump around to get little baby Ava’s attention all evening! We started at their family beach house and went straight to the sea wall for group pictures! We ended with a super gorgeous garden experience at Hereford Inlet Lighthouse which is a MUST see for plant enthusiasts like me (I may actually be somewhat of a plant hoarder).

Ok, enough rambling – check out this beautiful family beach session.

Newborn Baby Ava – South Philly

Welcome to the world Baby Ava! Check out this beautiful newborn shoot!

Have you heard of the website: Nextdoor? Well, it is a social media website that connects you to your local neighbors. People can post about a lost pet, furniture they are getting rid of, complaints, recommendations & more! I never would have thought it would have been a place to get a newborn referral but there’s a first for everything! Ava’s mom and I corresponded through the website and then met up for her first baby girl’s newborn session in South Philly.  Ava’s nursery was picture perfect! We were blessed with a gorgeous afternoon and the nursery had some big sliding doors letting in a ton of natural light. To say baby Ava was a natural in front of the camera is an understatement – she was certainly a joy to work with on her photography debut!

The Photo Connection

20170130-Mom 60-70-2-1

Have you ever had that feeling looking through your family’s old photographs…a tug on your heart strings – this real connection feeling? Photographs are able to take you back to a time and place and sometimes, even a feeling. Recently, my grandmother sent me albums full of photographs from the late ’50s to mid ’90s of my mom – I felt like I learned so much about her childhood growing up in Upstate, NY. Photographs from their camping trips to halloween and first communions. Photos tell the story when you are no longer able to. I’ve always had this obsession with visually documenting the places I’ve been, my favorite moments with my dearest friends. Some people document with words, they write down the feelings but me – I have to see it to remember it. So I urge you to think about your grandkids, and maybe even their grandkids…looking back at your life and the visual images that may continue on well after you do. Think about how connected they may feel to you and your experiences, making up stories in their head about you. Dreaming of simpler times (can you believe 2017 may be thought of to be a “simpler time” someday? scary.)

What I love about being able to take photos for others is that hunt I feel searching for that organic feeling, trying to capture so much more than just the moment. My favorite photos tend to be the more candid ones, catching that close moment between a child & parent…the almost kiss or sparkle of love in someones eyes. So whatever you do, take a second to snap a shot – you may not realize the story it may hold for years to come.

And, every once in awhile…when you want a picture of you and a loved one, I’d love to do my best to capture that special moment for you.

Enjoy some of my favorite shots from some family photo albums:

Family Shoot – Swarthmore College

Swarthmore College is one of the most beautiful spots in the Philadelphia area! The history and architecture sends sparks to my heart, I am obsessed! The Puzzangara Family certainly added to the gorgeous view – what a beautiful little family! We met mid-afternoon and despite the chill in the air, they smiled until the sun went down. It was a perfect weekend with some of the trees still holding on to their leaves! You can really feel the love!
